Contraindications and recommendations before and after laser tattoo removal

Laser tattoo removal requires proper skin preparation, correct qualification and following aftercare recommendations. This helps increase treatment safety, reduce the risk of irritation and support proper skin regeneration.

Before the first treatment at Nemezink Recovery, we discuss contraindications, assess the tattoo or permanent makeup and explain how to prepare for the visit. The information below will help you better understand the whole process.

How to prepare for the treatment?

2–4 weeks before the treatment

  • avoid tanning and UV exposure,
  • do not use self-tanners,
  • regularly use SPF 50+,
  • stop using retinoids, peels and strong acids according to the specialist’s recommendation,
  • do not wax the treatment area.

24–48 hours before the treatment

  • do not drink alcohol,
  • limit intense physical activity,
  • do not irritate the skin in the treatment area,
  • shave the treatment area if needed.

On the day of the treatment, the skin should be clean, not irritated, without fresh tan, wounds, active inflammation or infection.

Contraindications to laser tattoo removal

Not every person can undergo the treatment immediately. Some contraindications completely exclude the treatment at a given moment, while others require prior consultation and individual assessment.

Absolute contraindications

  • pregnancy and breastfeeding,
  • active skin infection in the treatment area, including herpes, bacterial infection or fungal infection,
  • active skin inflammation,
  • fresh tan or use of self-tanners,
  • active cancer,
  • uncontrolled diabetes,
  • tendency to develop hypertrophic scars or keloids,
  • broken skin in the treatment area,
  • use of oral isotretinoin, usually up to 6–12 months after finishing the therapy,
  • active connective tissue diseases,
  • use of photosensitising medications or herbs,
  • active psoriasis or atopic dermatitis in the treatment area,
  • recent chemical peels or ablative procedures.

Relative contraindications — consultation required

  • very dark skin phototype due to higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation,
  • tendency to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation,
  • photosensitive epilepsy,
  • autoimmune diseases,
  • use of anticoagulant medications,
  • steroid therapy,
  • recent aesthetic medicine treatments such as Botox, skin boosters or fillers,
  • active cystic acne,
  • vitiligo,
  • wound healing disorders.

If you are not sure whether any contraindication applies to you, contact us before your visit. Skin safety is our priority.

Typical reactions after the treatment

After laser tattoo removal, the skin may react naturally. Typical post-treatment reactions include:

  • skin whitening, known as frosting,
  • redness,
  • swelling,
  • itching,
  • small blisters,
  • scabs.

These reactions may appear immediately after the treatment or in the following days. Their intensity depends on factors such as pigment type, treatment area, treatment parameters and individual skin response.

Aftercare after the treatment

Proper skin care after the treatment is very important. We recommend:

  • keep the treatment area clean and dry,
  • do not puncture blisters,
  • do not pick scabs,
  • wear loose clothing that does not rub the treatment area,
  • avoid sun exposure for at least 4 weeks,
  • avoid intense training for a few days,
  • use regenerative products recommended by the specialist.

Incorrect aftercare may increase the risk of irritation, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, infection or scarring. That is why after each visit we provide detailed recommendations adjusted to the specific case.

What should you avoid after the treatment?

After the treatment, avoid:

  • sun exposure and tanning beds,
  • sauna,
  • swimming pool,
  • intense physical activity for a few days,
  • hot baths,
  • rubbing or scratching the treatment area,
  • irritating cosmetics,
  • peels, acids and retinoids in the treatment area until the skin is fully healed.

The skin needs time to regenerate after the treatment. Additional irritation of the treatment area may make healing more difficult and increase the risk of side effects.

Possible side effects

Laser tattoo removal is a treatment process, so despite proper qualification and appropriate technology, side effects may occur. These include:

  • redness,
  • swelling,
  • scabs,
  • petechiae,
  • blisters,
  • post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation,
  • hypopigmentation,
  • scarring, rarely,
  • allergic reactions to tattoo pigment breakdown,
  • paradoxical darkening of pigment.

The risk of side effects depends on factors such as skin condition, pigment type, tattoo location, following aftercare instructions and individual body response.

Important information

Tattoo removal requires a series of treatments. The number of sessions is individual and depends on many factors, such as pigment color, depth of placement, age of the tattoo, body area and individual body response.

Some colors may be more difficult to remove, for example green, yellow or turquoise. Pigment residue, so-called “ghost tattoo”, hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation may also occur.

Before starting the therapy, we discuss possible scenarios and realistic results. We do not promise the same result to every person — every tattoo and every skin reacts differently.

When should you contact us after the treatment?

Contact us if after the treatment you notice worrying symptoms, severe pain, increasing swelling, signs of infection, pus, extensive blisters or any reaction that concerns you.
